Ja Morant speaks for the first time about joining the Trail Blazers: New team, new environment, it's like starting all over again.
2026-07-12 12:45July 12th - According to ESPN , Ja Morant , who was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers this summer, recently spoke publicly for the first time about his feelings regarding the transfer. He stated that joining a new team means a " fresh start " in his career , and he also hopes that the public can change their stereotypes about him.
Morant admitted that his public image had been affected by off-court incidents in the past, but those issues have long been addressed. He stated, " I hope people can truly understand me, instead of dwelling on the past. I have grown a lot and become more mature. "
Ja Morant played seven seasons with the Grizzlies, leading the team to the playoffs four times, but two shooting incidents in 2023 cast a shadow of controversy over his career. This summer, the Trail Blazers traded Jerami Grant and Chris Murray to Portland to acquire the two-time All-Star guard.
“ A new city, a new team, a new environment—it’s like starting all over again. I’ve grown a lot and matured a lot, and now I’m ready to give it my all, ” Morant said.
Last season, Morant only played 20 games due to injury, averaging 19.5 points and 8.1 assists per game. He stated that after several months of recovery and training, his physical condition is now excellent.
Regarding potential competition in the backcourt, Morant said he is willing to accept either starting or coming off the bench and looks forward to playing alongside teammates such as Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday .
