In an interview, Liverpool's new manager Andoni Iraola said that his top priority is to instill his tactical philosophy in the players during training and hopes that they can be in better shape for the new season.
In the 2025/26 Premier League season, Liverpool, who were expected to compete with other teams for the title, failed to maintain a consistent performance and ultimately finished only 5th, securing a Champions League spot.
Following Sloan's departure from Liverpool, 44-year-old Andoni Iraola was appointed as Liverpool's new manager in June.
Andoni Iraola said, "I've been looking forward to officially starting training. I've been here for the past two weeks, mainly training with the U21 players and conducting various physical tests, but as the head coach, I ultimately hope to be able to really start my job."
"The weather has been great these past few days, which has made training go very smoothly. The players have all shown a great attitude towards training, and the overall situation is satisfactory."
Andoni Iraola pointed out, "It's crucial to establish a playing style from day one. We need to make the players understand our requirements and gradually implement the way we want the team to play. At the same time, we must also learn from the players and gain a deeper understanding of them."
"We need to know clearly which positions and playing styles each player is most comfortable in, as well as which areas need further improvement and what aspects need adjustment. As long as we can spend more time on the training ground and train with the players, it will be the greatest help to us."
Players who have already returned to team training include Szoboszlai, Kelkez Milos, Chiesa, Jones, and Armin Page.
Andoni Iraola continued, "The players are very professional now. They trained according to plan during the offseason, so most of them returned to the team in good physical condition. Some players are in better shape, while others need more time to adjust, but we still have enough time to prepare. I hope that by the start of the new season, the whole team will be at its best."
"The worst news we've received since arriving here is that we currently have five players injured. Even Jaden Dance is unable to join us for preseason training due to an injury sustained while training with the U21 team. These players have different injuries, with three of them being long-term injuries and currently in different stages of rehabilitation."
In addition, Andoni Iraola added, "As for Bajczetic, his recovery is improving step by step, but he is still unable to participate in training camp for the time being, and we are still waiting for Endo Wataru to return."
