Aston Villa have officially announced the signing of 25-year-old Brazilian international midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £38 million. This is Aston Villa's second major signing this summer.
Gomes came through the youth academy of Flamengo in Brazil, where he won the Brazilian Serie A, the Brazilian Cup, and the Copa Libertadores. After transferring to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2023, he quickly adapted to the pace of the Premier League.
In his Premier League debut for Wolves against Southampton, substitute Gomez dribbled from midfield late in the game and slotted the ball into the top corner, securing a dramatic and dream-like victory for his team.
During his three and a half seasons with Wolves, Gomez made 130 appearances for the team. The 2023-24 season was a breakthrough season for him, as he took over the number 8 jersey and secured a starting midfield position.
In a match against Tottenham Hotspur in February 2024, Gomez scored a brace with a header and a shot, helping his team to an away victory. This was also the only time in his career that he has scored two goals in a single game.
With his tenacious defense and outstanding technique, Gomez not only won the Wolves fans' vote for Player of the Year, but also wore the captain's armband and was selected for the Brazilian national team. Now, joining Aston Villa, he will become the sixth Brazilian player in the club's history to play for them.
