Official: The Mavericks have waived Tyler Smith and signed Jett Howard to a two-way contract.

The Dallas Mavericks announced on Monday that they have signed Jeter Howard to a two-way contract. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed in accordance with team policy.

The 22-year-old Howard plays as a swingman and was selected 11th overall in the first round of the 2023 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. He has played three seasons for the Magic, appearing in 133 regular season games to date, averaging 4.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 11.0 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 39.2% and a three-point percentage of 32.6%.

Howard also played 4 times for the Magic in the playoffs, averaging 2.8 points in 4.3 minutes per game, shooting 4 of 7 from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range.

All indications suggest that Howard's salary next season will be around $670,000. Before switching to a standard contract, he can only play a maximum of 50 regular season games for the Mavericks, missing the playoffs and the play-in tournament.

To make room for Dwight Howard, the Mavericks also confirmed the release of 21-year-old two-way forward Tyler Smith. Smith spent last season frequently moving between the Mavericks and their G League affiliate, playing only 12 regular season games and averaging 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game.
