Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez officially apologized following his criticism of the club's management..

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez issued a formal apology on his official Instagram account on Thursday, following his criticism of the club's management during an interview after the midweek Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.

In an official statement, Martínez wrote: "Today, I met with the club’s management and the head coach."

"It was a very positive exchange; we shared our perspectives and had an honest conversation about what transpired following Tuesday’s match."

"As everyone knows, I am a passionate person with a deep love for football."

"I sincerely apologize for expressing my emotions at an inappropriate time and in an inappropriate setting, driven by the frustration of the defeat."

"Our club is at its best when we are united; I realize that my comments did not contribute to that unity."

"I know that everyone at Manchester United is giving their all to achieve our shared goal: bringing the success that this club and its supporters truly deserve."

"With this matter now behind us, we are fully committed to working together toward future victories."

Despite the apology, The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell reports that Manchester United’s management has decided to fine the player, and his future at the club has now become uncertain.

Whitwell revealed that Manchester United had been in talks with Martínez regarding a contract extension since 2023. However, having grown accustomed to the winning culture of the Argentina national team, Martínez remained unimpressed by the terms offered by the Red Devils.

Following this incident, it appears highly likely that Manchester United will decline to trigger the one-year extension option they hold on his contract.

Should he depart Manchester United next summer, it is probable that Martínez will move to La Liga.

Manchester United suffered a 0-2 away defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano on matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League league phase match this midweek, marking a five-match winless streak for the Red Devils across all competitions.

This poor run of form has left manager Michael Carrick in an increasingly precarious position.

After the match, in an interview with an Amazon Prime reporter, Martínez, unable to conceal his frustration over the defeat, lashed out: "I have to really restrain myself, but sometimes this just reflects the current state of our club."

"We performed well last season, but now, we expect the club's leadership to invest more and bring in new players to strengthen our competitive edge. After all, many other teams have added plenty of new faces. Look at Atlético Madrid, for instance; they have an excellent squad."

When asked if he had hoped for more investment in the squad during the summer transfer window, Martínez replied: "Yes, one hundred percent."

"I expected our technical director [Jason Wilcox] to do more, I have to be honest about that. At the same time, we as players also need to put in more effort."

"Building a strong squad is crucial so that we can be properly prepared for matches like the one tonight."

Regarding Carrick, Martínez remarked: "He’s done his best. But every season is different; you can’t just keep dwelling on last season’s results."

"Opponents know how you play, they’ve mastered every single detail. If the team doesn't make changes, it’s going to be in big trouble next season."

"You keep changing head coaches... but what about everything else? I can’t say much more. It’s easy to point fingers at the manager or the players tonight, but we really need to look at other areas as well."
