Klopp will replace Nagelsmann as head coach of the German national team.

The German Football Association (DFB) has officially announced that Jürgen Klopp, the legendary coach, has reached an agreement on the core terms of a potential contract to become the head coach of the German national team.

The 59-year-old former Liverpool manager is expected to sign a long-term contract until 2030, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who has just stepped down.

The German Football Association (DFB) revealed in a statement that its president, Neuendorf, and vice president, Watzke, held their first in-depth meeting with Klopp in New York yesterday. The two sides reached a preliminary agreement during a constructive exchange, and negotiations will continue next week.

Currently, the finalization of the deal still requires the consent of Klopp's current employer, Red Bull Group, and joint approval from the German Football Association's internal supervisory board and shareholders' meeting.

Although Germany qualified for the knockout stage of this World Cup with a game to spare, they suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32. Despite Nagelsmann's post-match expression of determination to remain in his position, the German Football Association ultimately confirmed his early dismissal on July 3, terminating his contract which was originally scheduled to expire at the 2028 European Championship.

Klopp has been unemployed since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season. Previously, he served as Red Bull's global football director and was a commentator for German television during the World Cup.

During a television appearance, Klopp was criticized by several club legends, including Matthäus, for commenting that Nagelsmann was still selecting players. Klopp subsequently issued a public apology, stating that he had had a negative impact and reiterating that he would not disrupt the national team's normal operations. With negotiations progressing, the countdown to the renowned coach taking charge of the German national team has begun.
