According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, the Toronto Raptors have reached a three-year, $24 million contract extension with guard Jamal Shedd.
This new agreement will keep the 24-year-old point guard with the Raptors, with his contract running until the 2029-2030 season.
As the 45th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Shedder quickly established himself in head coach Darko Rajakovic's system after entering the league, thanks to his defensive and playmaking abilities. Throughout his career, Shedder has averaged 21.1 minutes per game, scoring 6.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 0.9 steals.
Although Shede still needs to improve his outside shooting, his ball-handling performance off the bench is very consistent. Last season, his assist-to-turnover ratio was as high as 3.96 to 1, ranking among the top five rotation guards in the entire league.
Defensively, Shedder possesses the ability to apply defensive pressure across the entire court. Data shows that when he's on the court, the Raptors allow only 111.3 points per 100 possessions, placing them among the top teams in net rating for his presence on the court. In the first round of the previous playoffs, he also filled in for starting point guard Quickley in four games while Quickley was injured, averaging 32 minutes per game and shouldering an important role.
For the Raptors, the contract is expected to account for only about 4% of the team's salary cap, allowing them to lock in quality rotation players at a relatively low and certain cost. For Shedder, after earning only $3.8 million in his first two years in the league, he has secured long-term salary security and will be able to re-enter the free agent market at age 28.
