The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) announced on Thursday that Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as head coach of the national team again. No official announcement has yet been made regarding Queiroz's successor.
The 73-year-old Queiroz has coached numerous national teams, including Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman, leading different teams to the World Cup finals five times (2002, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022). He has also served as manager for Sporting CP, Tohoku Metropolitan Stars, Nagoya Grampus, and Real Madrid, winning one Portuguese Cup, one Portuguese Super Cup, and one Spanish Super Cup.
Since taking over from Otto Addo in April, Queiroz has accumulated a record of 1 win, 12 draws and 4 losses. He first led Ghana to elimination in the Round of 32 of the USA-Mexico World Cup, and then suffered two consecutive defeats in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
It's worth noting that Queiroz briefly stepped down in July of this year due to the expiration of his term. Although he returned to the position at the urging of the Ghana Football Federation, his coaching performance has fallen far short of expectations.
In an official statement, Queiroz bid a heartfelt farewell to Ghana: "After discussions in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Federation and I have agreed to terminate the service agreement regarding my role as head coach of the Ghana national team."
"This was a difficult decision, but both sides agreed that ending our partnership was the most appropriate course of action under the current circumstances. In any case, the interests of Ghana, Black Star FC, and Ghanaian football always come first."
“I am deeply honored to play for Ghana and Black Star. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Federation and its president for their trust in giving me the opportunity to lead a football powerhouse.”
“When I took over Ghana, I was determined to build a brighter future for Black Star FC and support the development of football talent in the country. Despite our great efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully met. Coupled with the national team’s recent performance, this ultimately led us to decide to end this process.”
"I leave with respect, gratitude and pride."
"Thank you to my coaching team and everyone who has supported us, especially those who have supported us since we began preparing for the 2026 World Cup."
"Most importantly, I want to pay tribute to the players of the Black Star team. Thank you to every player who represented Ghana with courage, dedication and pride. You fought for your country and carried the hopes of millions."
"Trust the players. Protect them. Support them."
“They have talent and potential. With unity, support, and the right environment, this generation of players can achieve great things for Ghana.”
"To the people of Ghana and all fans: Thank you for your enthusiasm, support and warmth. I will always remember Ghana with respect and deep affection."
"Ghana first. Black Star team first. Ghanaian football first. Thank you, Ghana. Let's move towards the future."
