Bundesliga – Keisuke Goto's header sealed the victory for Freiburg, giving them a 2-1 win and putting them temporarily at the top of the table.

In the fifth round of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season, Freiburg, playing with ten men, defeated Schalke 04 2-1 in a last-minute victory. They currently sit atop the table with 13 points from 4 wins and 1 draw, leading second-placed Borussia Dortmund by 3 goals in goal difference.

Schalke's ranking in the Bundesliga has slipped to 13th, with an overall record of 1 win, 2 draws and 2 losses.

After the start of the first half, Freiburg, playing at home, took the initiative. In the 1st minute, Igor Matanovic attempted a long-range shot to test the opposing goalkeeper, but Loris Karius easily saved it. In the 8th minute, Maximilian Eggestein delivered a through ball, and Dele Scherhant, facing multiple defenders in the penalty area, fired a shot high and wide. In the 10th minute, Scherhant took a corner from the left, and Matthias Ginter's header at the far post was saved by Karius. Eggestein followed up and scored on the rebound, giving Freiburg the lead.

However, the Black Forest Army's lead lasted only about 20 minutes: in the 30th minute, Robin Gosens' corner kick from the right was saved by Mio Backhaus, and Adrian Gantenbein's follow-up shot deflected off Keinan Karaman and into the net. Neither side managed to score again, and both went into halftime with one goal each.

The second half began with both sides switching ends. In the 60th minute, Gosens delivered a corner kick from the left, and Nikola Katic's header at the far post forced Schörhant to clear the ball off the line. In the 64th minute, Suzuki Yuito fouled Sufian Fauzi during a challenge, subsequently receiving his second yellow card and being sent off. Playing with ten men, Freiburg found themselves under immense pressure for the remainder of the match.

Surprisingly, Freiburg extended their lead in the end: in the 85th minute, Vincenzo Grifo delivered a cross from the left wing at a 45-degree angle, and Keisuke Goto headed the ball into the net for a dramatic winner. When the final whistle blew, Freiburg defeated Schalke 2-1.
