Brighton announced on their official website on Wednesday that the red card issued to their Netherlands defender Pascal Struijk has been rescinded following a successful appeal.
According to Brighton’s statement, the club lodged an appeal against the red card shown to Struijk during their recent Premier League match against Sunderland.
Following a review, an independent regulatory body has upheld the club’s appeal and overturned the decision, clearing Struijk to feature in this weekend’s fixture.
Struijk, who was making his away debut for Brighton at the Stadium of Light last weekend, was sent off in the 57th minute of the match.
The former Leeds United player, who joined the Seagulls this summer for a fee of £15 million, was shown a red card for his challenge on Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor.
The incident occurred as Isidor attempted to contest a header just outside the penalty area. After a review by VAR official Neil Davies and a subsequent check of the pitchside monitor, referee Tom Bramall opted to send Struijk off.
Although replays suggested it was highly unlikely that Isidor would have reached the ball before Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Struijk was deemed to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
Brighton are set to face their arch-rivals Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend. Prior to that, they will travel to Lithuania in midweek to take on Kauno Žalgiris in the UEFA Conference League.
About Pascal Struijk
The 27-year-old Struijk was born on August 11, 1999, in Deurne, Belgium. He is 1.90 meters tall and primarily plays as a center-back but can also play as a left-back or a defensive midfielder. He holds citizenship in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Indonesia.
During his youth, Struijk spent time in the academies of ADO Den Haag and Ajax. In 2018, he joined the Leeds United youth academy, and in December of the following year, completed his Leeds United first-team debut by coming on as a substitute.
Over his seven-year tenure with the Whites, Struijk won the EFL Championship title twice.
This July, Struijk joined Brighton for a fee of £15 million.
Since joining the Seagulls, he has so far made six appearances for the Premier League side across all competitions, though he has yet to score or assist.
