According to a report by ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday, the Memphis Grizzlies have decided to waive Jordan Hawkins, whom they recently acquired through a trade. He further noted that the decision was reached through mutual agreement.
All indications suggest that the Grizzlies' move is aimed at allowing Hawkins to enter the free agent market and find a new team. If Hawkins is not claimed by another team during the waiver period, the Grizzlies will still be responsible for his full $7.02 million salary for the 2026/27 season.
After parting ways with Hawkins, the Grizzlies' standard contract roster has dropped to 16. Micah Pive is widely expected to be the next Grizzlies player traded or waived, with Chris Murray also considered a potential departure.
Hawkins, 24, is a 6'6" (1.96m) and 86kg (4.5kg) guard who entered the NBA in 2023 as the 14th overall pick in the first round. He spent his first three seasons with the Pelicans, playing a total of 174 regular season games, averaging 8.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 18.2 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 37.4%, a three-point percentage of 34.8%, and a free throw percentage of 82.9%.
In September of this year, the Pelicans traded Hawkins to reduce their salary burden. They sent Hawkins and Pivy to the Grizzlies, along with a second-round pick and a second-round swap option.
