Swiss defender Fabian Schär has extended his contract with Newcastle United until 2027.

Newcastle United have officially announced that they have extended the contract of 34-year-old Swiss centre-back Fabian Schär.

The two sides signed a new one-year contract, under which Schär will remain at St. James' Park until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Schär's original contract was set to expire at the end of June this year. As a key player who joined the team in July 2018, he is currently the second longest-serving player on the team.

To date, Schär has made 251 appearances for Newcastle United in all competitions, demonstrating solid defensive performances and contributing 22 goals. In the past few seasons, he has helped the team secure Champions League qualification twice and win the League Cup last year.

Speaking about the contract extension, Schär said, "I'm really happy to stay at the club. I feel I've gained a lot in my eight years here, but I believe there will be many more exciting moments in the future."

“I am proud to call Newcastle United my home. The way last season ended due to injury was not what I wanted, but now all my energy is focused on getting back to health and helping the team achieve our goals next season.”

Head coach Eddie Howe spoke highly of the veteran's decision to stay, saying, "Fabian has been performing exceptionally well since I joined this football club, so I'm really happy to see him continue to stay with us."

“He is an invaluable member of our roster, not only because of his ability on the field, but also because of the leadership and experience he brings to the team.”

With the season concluded, the club's management and Schär quickly reached an agreement, securing the core defensive force for the team early in the summer transfer window. Schär is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation and is expected to return to the first-team squad in the upcoming preseason.
