Official: Freiburg extends contract with 32-year-old center-back Ginter

Freiburg released a statement on Tuesday confirming the contract extension with Matthias Ginter. As is customary, neither side disclosed the specific length or details of the new contract.

A native of Freiburg, the 32-year-old Ginter is one of the youth academy's finest products. He made his professional debut for Freiburg on January 21, 2012, and subsequently played for Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

In July 2022, Ginter returned to Freiburg on a free transfer. He primarily plays as a center-back for Freiburg, making 255 appearances to date, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists.

Ginter has represented Germany in three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022), one Confederations Cup (2017), and one European Championship (2021), winning the 2014 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup. To date, he has made 51 appearances for Germany, contributing 2 goals and 5 assists.

After the contract extension was finalized, Freiburg's sporting director, Jochen Säll, explained: "Matz is a key figure in our team. His performance level and consistency are impressive, and he has played an important role in the team's development. Despite playing professional football for many years, Matz remains as energetic and ambitious as ever. We are very pleased that he will continue to stay with the team."

Ginter stated, "Freiburg Football Club has always been an integral part of my life. I've been cheering for the team from the children's stand at the Drysam Stadium since I was a child, and the club's development since then has been amazing. We hope to build on our shared achievements and continue to push our limits."
