Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has extended his contract until 2029.

Borussia Dortmund released a statement on Tuesday confirming the contract extension with head coach Niko Kovac. He will remain in his position until June 30, 2029, after the end of this season.

The 54-year-old Kovac, known as "the scientist," is widely recognized as an outstanding representative of Croatian coaches. He has coached numerous teams, including Croatia, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, Monaco, and Wolfsburg, and his honors include one Bundesliga title, two German Cup titles, and one German Super Cup title.

In February 2025, Kovac officially succeeded Nuri Sahin as manager of Borussia Dortmund. To date, he has led the team to a record of 49 wins, 14 draws, and 17 losses.

After the contract extension was finalized, Dortmund's sporting general manager, Lars Ricken, explained: "Since Niko Kovac took over a year and a half ago, we have been on a very good track. He has been driving the team's development and is highly respected within the club."

“Extending Nico’s contract is a clear signal of Dortmund’s commitment to consistency and stability. At the same time, Nico knows what Dortmund can offer him. That’s why we quickly and unanimously decided to continue working together.”

Dortmund's sporting director, Ole Booker, added: "From the first day I took over, Nico and I gradually built a relationship of mutual trust. Nico is extremely meticulous in his work, and his rich experience gives him a calm demeanor that benefits the whole team. We communicate almost every day and are working together to push the team to a new level to ensure Dortmund's success."

Kovac concluded by saying, "Together, we have established a clear direction for development and laid an important foundation for the future. We hope to go further on this foundation. We have a clear vision for our football style, team performance, and the conditions needed to achieve our goals. The key is that we cannot be complacent with our current achievements, but should strive to improve every day. We see Dortmund's enormous potential and firmly believe that as long as we work together with unwavering faith and determination, we will surely achieve great things."
