Newly promoted side Hong Kong Premier League Supreme Sha Tin announced via their official Instagram account on Wednesday that legendary former Manchester City and Spain international attacking midfielder David Silva is coming out of retirement to join the club.
According to Supreme Sha Tin's official statement, Silva will arrive in Hong Kong in mid-October to complete a medical examination, finalize the signing, and join the squad. He is set to play one match for the club initially, with arrangements for any further appearances to be determined later.
While the club did not disclose the length of Silva's contract, the South China Morning Post reported that he is expected to sign only a short-term deal with Supreme Sha Tin.
Additionally, fans who join Supreme Shatin’s "Founding Member" program will have the exclusive opportunity to be among the first to watch Silva train with his teammates and take photos with him.
Following the announcement of his move to Supreme Sha Tin, Silva said on his official Instagram social media account: "I am delighted to join Supreme Sha Tin and be part of this experience."
"I am really looking forward to visiting Hong Kong to experience the culture, the people, and the food of Sha Tin, and, of course, the football. I am full of anticipation and can't wait to get started; see you all soon."
It is worth mentioning, this marks Silva's first return to action since announcing his retirement in July 2023.
At that time, he decided to end his 20-year professional career after spending three seasons with Real Sociedad.
About David Silva
The 40 year-old Silva was born on January 8, 1986, in Arguineguín, Las Palmas (the capital of the Canary Islands, Spain). He is 1.7 meters tall and primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but is also capable of playing as a winger or a supporting striker.
As a youngster, Silva played in the youth academy of non-league club San Fernando before moving to Valencia's youth academy at the age of 14; between 2004 and 2005, he gained valuable match experience through loan spells at Eibar and Celta Vigo.
Upon returning to the squad in the summer of 2006, Silva completed his Valencia first-team debut and quickly established himself as a key starter.
During his six-year tenure with Los Che, Silva won the Copa del Rey once and attracted interest from several Premier League giants thanks to his exceptional passing and scoring abilities.
In the summer of 2010, after helping the Spain national team win the FIFA World Cup, Silva joined Manchester City for a fee of £24 million.
Over his ten-year spell with the Cityzens, Silva made 436 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 77 goals and providing 140 assists, where he has won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and three Community Shields, cementing his status as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history.
After his contract expired in 2020, Silva joined Real Sociedad on a free transfer.
During his three-year spell with the La Liga side, Silva made 93 appearances across all competitions, scored 7 goals, provided 18 assists, and won the Copa del Rey once.
