The turmoil both on and off the pitch in the Premier League continues to unfold after an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of breaching financial rules, including charges of "sham contracts."
Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner recently made a public statement, saying that the protracted scandal has dealt a heavy blow to the global brand image of the Premier League, and called on regulators to finalize the ruling as soon as possible to uphold the integrity of the top league.
Previously, an independent commission determined that Manchester City had artificially inflated its revenue by more than £900 million over nine seasons. Although Manchester City has formally appealed and maintained its innocence, claiming that the ruling contained significant factual and legal errors, if the appeal fails, the club could face severe sporting penalties, including points deductions or even expulsion from the Premier League.
Glasner expressed deep concern about this. He cited his previous experience managing Crystal Palace, where UEFA's multi-club ownership investigations left European qualification uncertain and the lawsuits dragging on until just before the start of the season, lamenting how protracted legal proceedings drained the sport.
Glasner stated, "My only hope is that this ends as soon as possible. This matter has sparked widespread discussion in Europe and even globally. The core foundation of a league lies in its credibility; once fans lose faith in the fairness of the competition, they will choose to turn off their TVs and leave."
Besides Glasner, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery also became the first Premier League manager to publicly comment on the matter, stating that if the violation is confirmed, it will damage the credibility of the league. He also expressed deep regret for Guardiola's Manchester City team, which was known for its tactical beauty.
Manchester City is currently pushing forward with the appeal process, but it is widely believed that only a swift resolution to this case can salvage the Premier League's shaky reputation in the global public opinion battle.
