Canada's national men's soccer coach Jesse Marcy confirmed on Monday that team captain and key player Alphonso Davies is likely to miss the opening match of the World Cup next month due to an unhealed hamstring injury.
However, Davies is expected to return to action in the subsequent group stage matches. He suffered a hamstring strain on May 6th while playing for Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.
Regarding whether Davis will be fit for the World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, Marsch said: "I think Alfonso will be able to play in this World Cup. However, I don't think he will be fully ready on June 12, but we will have to wait and see."
As the team's absolute core, this speedy left-back has been plagued by recurring injuries in recent years. When representing the national team in March 2025, Davies unfortunately suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), causing him to miss a full year of national team matches.
Although Davis recovered from his injury in December last year, he suffered a torn hamstring fiber on his right side again in February this year, and then missed two national team friendlies in March due to a hamstring strain.
Despite still recovering from injury, Davis has been included in the latest 32-man training squad. Canada will announce its final official World Cup squad on Friday. After their opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada will travel to Vancouver to face Qatar and Switzerland in their group.
