The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Sunday that it has renewed the contract of national team coach Vladimir Petkovic. The 62-year-old Petkovic will remain in his position after the World Cup, with the new contract extending his tenure for two years until July 2028.
According to Algerian media outlet El Khabar, Petkovic's monthly salary will increase from €135,000 to €160,000 after the contract extension. He initially demanded €180,000 per month in negotiations, but this was ultimately rejected by the Algerian Football Federation.
In addition to Petkovic himself, all members of his coaching staff have also renewed their contracts. According to the official statement, Algerian assistant coach Davide Morandi, goalkeeping coach Guido Nanni, and fitness coach Paulo Longoni will continue to work alongside Petkovic for the next two years.
Petkovic has managed clubs including Bellinzona, Lugano, Young Boys, Samsson, Sion, Lazio, and Bordeaux, leading Lazio to the 2012/13 Coppa Italia title. He also coached the Swiss national team for seven years, during which time they qualified for the 2016 and 2021 European Championships and the 2018 World Cup.
In February 2024, Petkovic officially succeeded Jamal Belmadi as head coach of the Algerian national team. To date, he has achieved a record of 21 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses, and led the team back to the World Cup finals after a 12-year absence.
The Algerian Football Federation stated that the contract renewal reflects "the national team's stability and ambition in future international competitions." Algeria has been placed in Group J in the 2026 USA-Mexico World Cup, where they will compete against Argentina, Jordan, and Austria for a place in the knockout stage starting June 17.
