Ahead of their 150th anniversary season, Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially begun their rebuilding process. The club announced the signing of veteran full-back Kieran Trippier, who becomes Rob Edwards' first new signing this summer transfer window. The 35-year-old Trippier joined Wolves on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract. His arrival is seen as a key step in the squad's rebuilding process, given the team's strong push to return to the Premier League.
Before joining Wolves, Kieran Trippier played for Newcastle United for four years, playing a key role in the club's development. He helped the team transform from relegation contenders to Champions League participants, and was one of the key contributors to the club's success in recent years.
Kieran Trippier was born in Bury, Greater Manchester, and grew up in Manchester City's youth academy. Early in his career, he gained experience on loan at Barnsley and Burnley before permanently joining Burnley, where he helped the team achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2014.
Kieran Trippier's consistent performances in the Premier League caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur, leading to his transfer. He subsequently helped the team reach the 2019 Champions League final, and at the national team level, he made his England debut in June 2017 against France.
At the national team level, Kieran Trippier has made 54 appearances for England, winning runner-up titles at both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. His most memorable moment was scoring a spectacular free-kick against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, a moment that remains one of the most iconic of his career.
Besides his success in the Premier League, Kieran Trippier also challenged himself in Spain. While playing for Atlético Madrid, he won the La Liga title with Diego Simeone's team and became the first English player to wear the Atlético Madrid jersey in 95 years. Six months later, he returned to the Premier League, beginning a new chapter with Newcastle United.
Since beginning his career at Newcastle United, Kieran Trippier has quickly become a key figure in the dressing room and on the pitch. His exceptional leadership and consistent performances have been crucial to the team's resurgence under Eddie Howe, helping Newcastle regain its competitiveness. Now at Wolves, he hopes to continue contributing his value and help the team achieve its goal of returning to the Premier League.
Wolves executive chairman Shi Yu said of the signing: "Kieran Trippier has maintained a top level throughout his career, and we are delighted that he has chosen to join Wolves. He is not only a very talented player, but also a natural leader with a strong competitive spirit. His experience at the top level, in the Champions League and with the national team will have a positive impact on the team."
“We fully recognize the competition and challenges of the new Championship season, but Kieran Trippier’s arrival also demonstrates the club’s ambition and goals. We expect him to bring his professionalism, personal charisma and high standards to the team and drive the club’s continued progress.”
Head coach Rob Edwards also expressed high approval of the signing. He said, "I'm very happy to have him with the team. When we first met, I could feel his strong desire to join Wolves. We know what the team is lacking this season and we know where we need to strengthen next season, and Kieran Trippier is a perfect fit for those criteria."
“He has everything: ability, experience, leadership, and game intelligence, and he remains highly motivated. He’s eager to help the team return to the Premier League, which is exactly what we all want. He actually has a lot of other options, so it was very important to complete this deal, which proves that Wolves are still a very attractive club. After Andre’s contract extension, I don’t think it would have been possible for us to start the summer in a much better way.”
Technical Director Matt Jackson said: "We are delighted to have completed the signing of Kieran Trippier. This is the result of the joint efforts of Rob Edwards, Shi Yu and myself, and he himself fully agrees with the club's overall plan and development direction."
“He has always been our top transfer target, and it was crucial for us to sign him early in the transfer window. This allows us to plan our next steps more clearly and ensure that he is training with the team from the first day of preseason.”
“We are very pleased that he chose to join Wolves, which further proves the club’s appeal. The fan base, club culture, and internal team environment all make it possible for a player with such an outstanding career as Kieran Trippier to come here.”
