In the second round of Group A of the 2026 World Cup, the Czech Republic and South Africa faced off at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta, USA. After 90 minutes of intense play, the two sides ultimately drew 1-1.
At the start of the first half, the Czech Republic took the initiative. Just 40 seconds into the game, Lajislav Krejcić delivered a cross from the left flank at a 45-degree angle, and Patrick Schick's header inside the penalty area went just wide. In the 5th minute, the deadlock was broken: Aleksandar Sojka played a through ball from the edge of the box, and Michal Sadilek slotted home to open the scoring for the Czech Republic. According to official information, Sadilek scored the fastest goal of this World Cup so far.
South Africa attempted to equalize before halftime but struggled to create any real threat. With long-range shots from Oswin Apolis, Aubry Modibah, and Teboho Mokona all failing to find the net, the Czech Republic went into halftime with a one-goal lead.
After the break, the Czech Republic tried to regain control of the game. In the 48th minute, Vladimir Cófal delivered a corner kick from the right, and Schick's header in the penalty area was saved by Ronven Williams. In the 52nd minute, Cófal again took a corner kick from the right, and Krejć's header went over the crossbar.
After that, South Africa chose to fight back. In the 80th minute, Tapelo Maseko's long-range shot caused Pavel Schulz to commit a handball foul in the penalty area, giving South Africa a penalty opportunity. Teboho Mokona then converted the penalty, bringing the two sides back to the same starting line.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw between the Czech Republic and South Africa. The Czech Republic currently sits third in the group with one point from one draw and one loss, while South Africa, also with one point, is at the bottom due to a worse goal difference.
