Alejandro Rego has renewed his contract with Athletic Bilbao, extending their partnership until June 2030.

Athletic Bilbao and local midfielder Alejandro Rego have reached an agreement on a contract extension, with the new deal running until June 30, 2030. A product of the club's youth academy, the young midfielder demonstrated impressive ability in his first season with the first team and has secured an important position within the squad.

In the 2025/26 season, Alejandro Rego made 41 appearances for the team, including all eight Champions League matches. He is also the only non-goalkeeper player in the team to participate in all Champions League competitions. The contract extension ceremony was officially completed at the San Mamés Stadium, with club president Jon Uriat and football director Mikel González in attendance.

After his first top-flight season, Alejandro Rego will continue to improve and repay the club's long-standing trust and support with his performances. Rego joined the Lezama youth academy at age 15 and received his initial football training at SD Indoçu and Santuçu before joining Athletic Bilbao.

This tall midfielder gradually developed his skills at the Lezama youth academy and was promoted to Athletic Bilbao B two seasons ago. Last summer, under the guidance of head coach Ernesto Valverde, he was officially promoted to the first team.

In the opening match of the 2025/26 La Liga season against Sevilla, Alejandro Rego made his first-team debut as a substitute in the final stages of the game. With Benat Prados sidelined with an injury, the young midfielder received more playing time. He subsequently made his Champions League debut against Arsenal and gradually became an important member of the squad. Against Real Mallorca, he scored his first official goal for Athletic Bilbao, helping his team secure a victory.

After completing his first season in the top league, Alejandro Rego has taken a significant step in his professional career. Whether he can continue to live up to his potential and the club's high expectations will depend on his future development and performance.

Football director Mikel González said: "Alejandro Rego has fully demonstrated the potential he showed in the Lezama youth academy. Making more than 40 appearances in his debut season in the top league is proof of his ability. As a defensive midfielder, he has very unique characteristics and promising growth potential."
