Jeremy Lin, grateful for his mother's sacrifices, said he once ate only sandwiches every day to save money.

In a recent podcast interview, former NBA star Jeremy Lin recalled how his mother emptied her savings to help him achieve his goal of playing in the NBA. To save money, Lin once ate only sandwiches worth about $5 a day.

In an interview, 37-year-old Jeremy Lin said, "When I was preparing for the NBA draft, my mother withdrew all the remaining money from her retirement plan account so that I could have enough to eat and concentrate on preparing for the draft."

“At that time, our family was already heavily in debt. We had borrowed money from banks, mortgaged our house, and even owed student loans from Harvard University, so no institution was willing to lend us any more money.”

In addition, Jeremy Lin continued, “Later we had to borrow money from relatives. At that time, my family was in a very difficult situation. My mother had some money left in her retirement benefit plan account, and she gave it all to me and told me that I had two years. If I still couldn’t achieve my dream after two years, then I would have to use my Harvard degree to find a job.”

"To save money, I ate Subway sandwiches every day because they had a $5 deal on extra-long sandwiches. I would only eat until I was about 70% full because I was always thinking that if I kept eating, it would mean spending another $5.25. So I ate the same thing every day because I had no other choice."
