World Cup – Embolo and Ndoye score in quick succession as Switzerland defeats Algeria 2-0.

In the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 at BC Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. This victory secured their fourth consecutive appearance in the Round of 16, where they will face the winner between Colombia and Ghana.

Algeria launched an early attack, but Switzerland capitalized on a counter-attack to take the lead: in the 10th minute, Johan Manzambi seized the opportunity during the transition between attack and defense, breaking through to the edge of the penalty area before assisting Brere Embolo, who was making a run into the box, to open the scoring.

Both sides then exchanged attacks, but neither managed to score. In the 14th minute, Hussein Aouar's low shot from the edge of the penalty area was saved by Gregor Kober. In the 15th minute, Remo Freuler delivered a cross from the right side of the penalty area, and Denis Zakaria's shot from the center was also caught by Luca Zidane.

In the 37th minute, Ruben Vargas took a free kick from the left side of the attacking third, and Zakaria's header in the penalty area went over the crossbar. In the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Riyad Mahrez's cross from the right wing created a dangerous situation, and Ibrahim Maza's shot from inside the penalty area went wide of the goal line.

The second half began with the two teams switching sides. Less than a minute later, Switzerland extended their lead due to an opponent's mistake: Rafik Bergali's clearance in the penalty area went awry and became an assist, allowing Dan Ndoye to capitalize with a powerful shot into the bottom left corner. Thanks to goals from Embolo and Ndoye, the "Crusaders" made it 2-0.

Neither side managed to score again. In the 81st minute, Zakaria's cross from the right wing nearly sealed the victory, but Fabian Reid missed a golden opportunity with his shot finding the back of the net. At the final whistle, Switzerland defeated Algeria by two goals, eliminating them from the competition.
