De la Fuente says training intensity will continue to increase in preparation for the World Cup.

Spain took the lead in a friendly match thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres, but conceded a goal later in the game and failed to come back, ultimately drawing 1-1 with Iraq at the Riazor Stadium. De la Fuente stated that the team will enter a new phase and will increase the intensity of training in preparation for the World Cup.

In the 16th minute, Olmo played a through ball to Ferran Torres, who followed up and fired a low shot into the penalty area. The ball was deflected by Iraqi goalkeeper Basile before going into the net, giving Spain a 1-0 lead.

In the 27th minute, Akram Hashim made a long pass, and Mehgas Doski received the ball and chipped it into the net from the left wing, helping Iraq equalize the score at 1-1.

Neither side could break the deadlock for the remainder of the match, and the friendly ended in a 1-1 draw between Spain and Iraq.

In their next friendly match, Spain will face Peru before embarking on their journey to the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

In an interview, Spain's head coach De la Fuente said, "Today's focus is on regaining form and match fitness. We hope to play a physically demanding game and help the players gradually adapt to the rhythm of the game. The most important thing today is to regain match fitness and give other players a chance to play."

"It is very important that there have been no injuries. Now we will enter a new phase of preparation, with increased intensity in training and matches, and more players involved. We will be heading to the United States, and all our attention will be focused on our most important goal."

De la Fuente noted, "Iraq's performance was a pleasant surprise. We had a lot of trouble suppressing their attack in the first half. Every game is tough these days, and they showed good rhythm, intensity, and teamwork. They are a dynamic and distinctive team. They kept putting pressure on us and made the game very difficult."

"We will not treat this match as an ordinary friendly. Facing Iraq, we have both competitive goals and physical requirements. My thinking has not changed, and we still need to observe the situation over the next few days. There are 11 days until the first match of the World Cup, and we will have another friendly match in 4 days. We are very clear about our choice of goalkeeper. As for the other 10 starting players, we also have our plans."

Furthermore, when discussing Arsenal midfielder Merino who came on as a substitute, De la Fuente said, "Merino's ability to play is a positive sign. He needs to continue accumulating playing time, and so far, he is adapting very well to these demands."

"I believe that not only him, but other players will also make important contributions to the team in this World Cup and for a long time to come."
