Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Everton lost a legal dispute with Burnley and were ordered to pay the latter £35 million in damages.
According to the report, the hearing was presided over by the Premier League's Independent Disciplinary Commission.
The legal disputes concerns Everton's alleged breaches of the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2021/22 season, which ultimately led to Burnley's relegation.
At the hearing, Burnley accused Everton of wrongdoing that cost them their Premier League survival and resulted in significant financial losses.
At the hearing, both clubs submitted expert evidence to simulate the impact of Everton's £19.5 million overspending on their points tally.
The committee said that they found Burnley's evidence "more compelling" and concluded that it predicted Everton's points would increase by 3.85 to 7.13.
The committee added, "Based on a probabilities assessment, Everton's breach of the PSR (Professional Services Rule) led to Burnley's relegation," and any compensation would not affect Everton's PSR account for that period.
Taking all these factors into account, the committee ultimately accepted Burnley's complaint, ordering Everton to pay the latter £26 million in damages, plus £9 million in interests.
In response to the verdict, Everton issued a statement on its official website stating, "We firmly believe that the ruling is fundamentally flawed both legally and factually."
Everton said, "Given that the ruling is based on the principle that clubs can breach financial rules at any time during the financial year, it sets a dangerous and unworkable precedent for English football."
"Everton believes that the committee's ruling misrepresents the clear evidence submitted by its legal representatives, and that the appeal will be successful."
