Reece James admitted that the season's results were disappointing and that the team needs to seriously analyze the situation and find areas for improvement.

Chelsea captain Reece James admitted that the 2025/26 season was disappointing for the team, stating that under Xabi Alonso, there are still many areas for improvement next season. In the final round of the Premier League, Chelsea lost 1-2 to Sunderland, finishing tenth and missing out on European qualification for next season.

Reece James admitted that, given Chelsea's squad talent and club goals, the team's performance this season has fallen far short of expectations, and the team still needs to work hard and improve in many areas next season.

The player said, "We need to seriously review this season. It's far from what we expected, and we must look back at the whole process to see where we can do better in the future."

"For a club like Chelsea, simply missing out on European competition speaks volumes. The team has reached the pinnacle of European football many times in the past, but this season they failed to even qualify. Therefore, we must continue to learn and improve in many areas."

Chelsea fell behind early in the game. In the 25th minute, Trey Hume volleyed home from near the post, leaving Robert Sanchez helpless. Later, Marlo Guto's own goal gave Sunderland a two-goal lead. However, a brilliant long-range shot from Cole Palmer reignited the team's hopes of a comeback.

Unfortunately, Wesley Fofana was subsequently sent off with a red card. Chelsea were forced to play with ten men for more than 30 minutes afterward, ultimately failing to find an opportunity to equalize and missing out on a chance to qualify for next season's Europa League.

Reece James said: "I think this loss reflects our performance this season to some extent. We haven't played up to our usual standard. We did have some chances in the first half, but we didn't convert any of them into goals. If we had been able to take those chances, the game might have gone completely differently."

"Until the 100th minute whistle blew, I felt the game wasn't really over. Our only problem was that we missed the final crucial shot."

Reece James will represent England at this summer's FIFA World Cup, after which he will rejoin his Chelsea teammates for pre-season training under the new manager, Xabi Alonso, whose appointment was confirmed last weekend.

When asked about the club's goals for next season, Reece James replied: "Chelsea has always been like this: competing, challenging for titles, and showcasing our strength in European competitions. These are the basic requirements and minimum standards for this club."
