Ukrainian Counter Strike 2 team Monte's Austrian coach kakafu, revealed on his official X (Twitter) account on Tuesday that he had received a final warning and could face a suspension for the remainder of the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Cologne Major.
According to kakafu, after the second day of the tournament, the organizer, ESL, gave him a formal final warning, instructing him not to be overly emoted during matches or frequently shout instructions to his teammates on stage. Otherwise, he could face not only ejection but also a suspension for the remainder of the tournament.
The warning kakafu referred to is likely related to Rule 7.6 of the IEM Cologne Major tournament. This rule stipulates that coaches may only communicate with players during tactical timeouts and halftime breaks. Outside of these designated periods, coaches are prohibited from communicating with players in any other way (including but not limited to shouting or non-verbal communication such as physical contact). "
This rule aims to prevent coaches from cheating through unauthorized communication. For example, a specific shout or back pat might represent the use of a particular strategy.
While the underlying considerations are understandable, Valve's strict enforcement of this rule has often been criticized as unreasonable because it effectively forces coaches to remain silent throughout the match — a difficult requirement to meet in a Major tournament.
kakafu himself has also questioned this decision. He questioned, "If that's the case, I'd prefer the Valorant model where coaches use computers in another room."
Monte currently has a 2-1 record in the group stage, just one BO3 victory away from qualifying for Stage 3 of the IEM Cologne Major.
