In Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111 at Madison Square Garden.
However, after the game, multiple videos circulated on social media showing New York fans attacking Spurs fans in the streets and tearing their jerseys. According to the New York Police Department, at least 21 people have been arrested in connection with the altercation.
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama expressed strong condemnation after learning of the video. He emphasized, "It's just a game. I fully support passion, but only if there is mutual respect. This kind of violence is unacceptable."
Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns also spoke out, urging fans to remain rational. He stated that the game is built on respect and passion, and everyone should enjoy pure basketball, urging fans to leave the physical contact to the players on the court.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie pointed out that regardless of the outcome, fans should not escalate their emotions to the point of ganging up on or stalking others. Furthermore, Spurs rookie Dylan Harper commented that despite the hostile atmosphere of the New York away game, this was the first time he had felt uncomfortable there.
A Spurs spokesperson stated that the team's safety during their stay in New York was not affected. Players from both teams unanimously called on all fans, regardless of which team they support, to enjoy the Finals in a safe and respectful environment.
