Courtois may consider ending his national team career after the World Cup.

Belgium, nicknamed the "Red Devils," will travel to the Lumen Stadium to face Egypt in their first Group G match of the 2026 World Cup. Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has stated that he might consider ending his national team career after this World Cup.

The 34-year-old Courtois has played for Real Madrid for eight seasons, winning three La Liga titles, two Champions League titles, and two UEFA Super Cups, among other major trophies.

For the Belgian national team, Courtois has made 109 appearances.

In an interview, Courtois said, "I don't know if I should talk about the future now, but judging from the current situation, the possibility of not continuing to play for the national team after this tournament is greater than the possibility of continuing to play. However, I still hope to continue playing professional football for a few more years."

"At the same time, I must also take good care of my health. My family is here with me because this may be my last competition."

Courtois stated, "Things might be different if we have a great World Cup. And it would also have an impact if the team can maintain this positive atmosphere. After the tournament, I will need to have an in-depth discussion with the head coach, technical director, and team medical staff."

“During international break, players get rest time and can train more comfortably in the gym. I’ve had some minor injuries over the past year and a half. So, naturally, I’ve started thinking more about the future.”

Courtois also said, "I am indeed considering handing over the reins. There are many very talented young players now, such as Lamenz and Mike Penders. However, I am still full of fighting spirit, just like everyone else on the team. I am in very good physical condition and I am really looking forward to the games."

“I put in a lot of effort during my comeback in the spring. That quadriceps injury was really unfortunate because before that I felt like I was in pretty good shape. But now I'm ready, and I will continue to maintain my competitive level and focus on the upcoming matches.”
