According to TA reporter Dan Wojker, the Brooklyn Nets are highly likely to offer Austin Reeves a four-year, $178.5 million maximum contract this summer. They are projected to have the second-largest salary cap in the league next season, with nearly $78 million in room to maneuver before the luxury tax threshold.
As an undrafted free agent in 2021, Reeves had a breakout season in Los Angeles. He played 51 regular season games for the Lakers, averaging career-high 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 34.5 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 49.0% and a three-point percentage of 36.0%.
Affected by an oblique muscle injury, Reeves only played 6 games during the playoffs, contributing 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.2 blocks. The Lakers were ultimately swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, ending their run in the Western Conference semifinals.
It is widely believed that Reeves will decline his $14.9 million player option this summer. Several teams have expressed strong interest in him, including the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Utah Jazz, and San Antonio Spurs.
Wojker also pointed out that the Lakers still hope to retain Reeves. They could offer Reeves a five-year, $241 million contract extension, but this would severely impact the team's future salary structure.
Furthermore, the Lakers must prioritize addressing the future of several players this summer, including LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, and Jaxson Hayes. With relatively limited roster flexibility, retaining Reeves will be a significant test of Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka's wisdom.
