Wizards' rising star Sal underwent surgery for a fractured right foot and is expected to recover before the new season.

The Washington Wizards announced on Monday that center Alex Sarr has successfully undergone surgery to repair his fractured right foot and is expected to be healthy for the new season.

The 21-year-old, 7-foot tall prospect, who was selected second overall in the 2024 NBA draft, suffered an unexpected injury during an offseason practice late last week.

Last season, when healthy, Sarr showed great potential, averaging 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 48 games.

Although the Wizards have suffered more than 64 defeats in each of the past three seasons, the team hopes to make a leap forward in the new season and become a strong contender for the playoffs, and Sal is the core of this rebuilding plan.

To accelerate the development of their young core, the Wizards acquired All-Star players Trae Young and Anthony Davis through trades last season.

They will form the team's future alongside Sal, Kassean George, Trae Johnson, Bab Carrington, Will Riley, and the rookie the team will select with the number one pick in this month's draft.

Washington's management is pinning its hopes on Trae Young's playmaking ability and Anthony Davis's dominance on both ends of the court, in order to create better growth opportunities for Sal and help him have a breakout season in his crucial third year.
