On the eve of their upcoming World Cup match against co-hosts United States in Seattle, Australian assistant coach Hayden Fox stated that the players are mature enough to handle external media attention and hype independently, and the coaching staff will not restrict the players' use of social media.
Previously, both teams defeated Turkey and Paraguay respectively in the first round of Group D. This sparked heated discussions among American media and football commentators, with former US national team center-back Alexei Lalas publicly describing Australia as a mediocre team.
Fox believes there's no need to isolate oneself from external noise. He emphasized that players are independent individuals who are aware of media commentary, but the team is currently focused on its own goals, and the players are capable of discerning right from wrong.
In the first round of matches, Australia defeated Turkey 2-0 thanks to goals from Nestor Ilankunda and Connor Metcalf. Ilankunda revealed that Turkish captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu's pre-match comments that Turkey was more talented than Australia had indeed angered some of his players.
However, the Australian players are unfazed by the outside gossip. Metcalfe also stated that the entire team, under the leadership of head coach Tony Popovich, will face the United States with full confidence and energy.
Even so, Fox warned his players not to get carried away by the victory. He cited the example of Saudi Arabia's elimination from the group stage after defeating Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, reminding the team that beating Turkey was a thing of the past, and their only goal now was the United States.
