According to a report by ESPN's Shams Charania on Sunday, the Atlanta Hawks have reached a one-year, $21 million contract extension with CJ McCollum. McCollum's agent, Sam Goldfeld, subsequently confirmed that the contract includes a trade bonus clause.
NBA insider Jack Fisher further pointed out that McCollum's contract has a 7.5% guaranteed bonus. If the Hawks trade him within the next year, he will receive an additional $1.575 million in compensation.
McCollum, 34, is a 6'6" (1.91m) and 86kg (4.8kg) guard who entered the NBA in July 2013 as the 10th overall pick in the first round. He played for the Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Washington Wizards before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in January of this year along with Corey Kispert in the Trae Young trade.
To date, McCollum has played 41 regular season games for the Hawks, averaging 18.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.0 steals in 28.8 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 45.6% and a three-point percentage of 35.7%. His efficient performance helped the Hawks achieve an 18-20 record at the end of the regular season, ultimately advancing to the playoffs as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
McCollum also performed exceptionally well in the first round of the playoffs against the reigning NBA champions, the New York Knicks. He played six games and delivered an all-around performance of 19.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.2 blocks, and 1.0 steals, making the Hawks the only team to defeat the Knicks twice during the playoffs.
For the Hawks, re-signing McCollum aims to maintain the stability of their current core. McCollum will continue to play alongside young talents like Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker next season, with the goal of returning to the playoffs and winning at least one round of a series.
