Manchester United are about to face La Liga powerhouse Atletico Madrid away in the Champions League. Manager Michael Carrick addressed the team's recent slump in the pre-match press conference, acknowledging that the team is going through a difficult and challenging period, but he is confident that the players can quickly turn things around.
Manchester United have struggled at the start of the season, winning only 2 of their 8 matches across all competitions. After consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Brighton in the Premier League, they recently drew with Fulham and Tottenham. Last weekend, in their home game against Tottenham, United, despite having a one-man advantage, conceded a late equalizer in stoppage time and currently sit 13th in the league table.
Facing a storm of public opinion, Carrick displayed calmness and resilience in an interview. He stated, "We originally had higher expectations for this season, but this is the reality. Building a team takes a long time, and I anticipated this difficult period of stagnation, which we must learn to overcome."
When asked about calls for a "complete overhaul," Carrick responded, "When results are not good, it's inevitable that people will feel that disaster is imminent and everything is wrong. But I don't see it that way."
"On the contrary, it is in adversity that you can see who is truly stepping up in the locker room and in the club, and who wants to stay here. The fans crave victory, and we must give them that. To achieve great things, we must face challenges head-on, and I fully believe we can get through this."
Reflecting on the draw against Tottenham, Carrick commented on the details: "Victory or defeat often hinges on the smallest margins, and the goals conceded in recent rounds could have been completely avoided. But I have full confidence in these lads and firmly believe we can win more games back."
Manchester United, who thrashed Sabah 4-0 in the first round of the Champions League, undoubtedly have a crucial opportunity to rebuild their confidence and change the course of the season when they visit the Metropolitan Stadium.
