In their opening Group K match of the 2026 World Cup , Portugal took the lead after João Neves' goal, but conceded a goal later in the game and were unable to change the score, ultimately drawing 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Roberto Martínez stated that the team must improve and, more importantly , engage in severe self-criticism.
In the 6th minute, Pedro Neto chipped a pass from the left wing into the penalty area, where João Neves headed the ball into the net, giving Portugal a dream start with a 1-0 lead.
In the first half stoppage time, Masuwaku delivered a cross, and Vesa headed the ball into the net, helping the Democratic Republic of Congo equalize 1-1.
Neither side could break the deadlock in the remainder of the game, and Portugal were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo, failing to secure all three points.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said, "We definitely need to improve and we must do some serious self-reflection. I think our responsibility here is to carefully analyze this game and be very demanding of ourselves; that's the most important thing."
"That's the World Cup for you, and we will continue to work hard. What I saw first was the players' extraordinary attitude, and I still believe we can do even better."
Roberto Martinez noted, "The Democratic Republic of Congo played with great intensity and confidence. They treated this match like the final of a major tournament, and that showed an amazing attitude and spirit. We knew the Democratic Republic of Congo had that ability, so it didn't surprise me."
Portuguese midfielder João Neves said, "This is my first World Cup in my career, and I'm happy with my performance. But as I've always said, the most important thing is always the team."
“We still have many areas to improve, and what we really need is a win. The team is very united, and everyone is determined to keep improving and strive to perform better in the upcoming games.”
In addition, Newcastle striker Visa, who scored for the Democratic Republic of Congo, said, "I am of course very proud because we put in a tremendous effort. It was a very difficult game against a stronger team, but we showed courage and resilience."
"Scoring our first-ever World Cup goal makes us incredibly proud, as it embodies the spirit of this team. Now, the most important thing is to keep going and maintain this momentum."
